Ultimate purpose of all engineering activities is to produce usable and salable goods. In the light of this fact, manufacturing is basically the science of transforming materials into usable end products. Today’s highly competitive market conditions require the combination of creative design, modular product architecture, functionality, high quality, aesthetic, high technology and low cost on a single product. The main emphasis of the manufacturing engineering program is on how to manufacture products with these characteristics, including design, material selection, machinery, quality control, plant layout and production planning (low scale system engineering), transportation, employee supervision, and economic analysis concepts.
Life cycle of products is becoming shorter and shorter on each day. As in the case of automotive industry, there is a sharp decrease in the life cycle of automobiles from a couple of decades to a couple of years. In order to become competitive in such demanding markets and/or to satisfy the challenging customer needs; in addition to the traditional manufacturing processes such as milling, turning or casting, today, non traditional production processes such as laser machining or electro-photo chemical machining are also become inevitable in product development processes.
Revolutionary development in computer technology and electronics in the last fifty years make these technologies possible to use in manufacturing systems. Today computer aided design (CAD), computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) technologies and industrial robotic applications are essential parts of manufacturing systems. Moreover, rising need in the design and manufacturing of micro systems add these new topics also into the area of manufacturing engineering program.
Consequently, the main purpose of this program is to educate engineers, who have the ability to incorporate all these technologies and engineering creativity by utilizing from resources, time, money and labor in the most efficient way without disregarding environmental facts.
